Case study 04 — Building & Public Works
Earthworks and paving of a courtyard
Reworking an inner courtyard: earthworks, falls, poured slab and large-format paving laid through to the edges.
- Year
- 2024
- Location
- Abidjan
- Division
- Building & Public Works
The context
An earth courtyard between two walls, which turns to mud with every rainy season. The problem is not the surface — it is the fall: without falls set correctly, water sits under the paving and lifts it within a year.
The brief Make the courtyard usable and take the rainwater away, with nothing to put right at the next season.
What was delivered
- 01 Excavation and removal of spoil.
- 02 Falls set towards the outfall, hardcore and compaction.
- 03 Slab poured, reinforced and screeded.
- 04 Large-format paving laid and grouted through to the edges, junctions with the walls detailed.
The outcome
Courtyard handed over usable, with a fall that carries water to the outfall. The edges are detailed right up to the face of the walls — that is where lifting starts when they are not.
